At age 73, Toni Perl is one of the youngest people living at Baycrest’s Reuben Cipin Healthy Living Community at Two Neptune Drive, the vibrant independent living residence she says has a reputation for being “party central.”

“People are busy here all day long,” says Perl, who moved in eight years ago and has been president of the Residents’ Council since January 2020. COVID-19 restrictions put a damper on the popular social events and curtailed the robust variety of recreational programs, but Perl says that morale is good and residents are staying engaged and connected through virtual programming.

“I didn’t know that a place like this existed when I moved to Toronto from Montreal,” she says. “I really lucked out. This is such a unique building.”

The close proximity to Baycrest is also a plus. Perl hopes to resume her volunteer activities on the Baycrest campus when pandemic restrictions are lifted. It also gives residents peace of mind to know they can access the wealth of programs and services available right next door.

After suffering two mini-strokes last year, Perl feels happy and secure living in such a warm and caring community of friends.

“This place is my heart, my family and my life.”
