Funds to support researchers breaking new ground in aging brain health
(TORONTO – August 21, 2013) – Brain-health researchers with exciting new ideas will now have the opportunity to receive funding, thanks to a $1 million gift from the Estate of Anne Tanenbaum. This generous gift will establish The Anne Tanenbaum Kick Start Grants Program, allowing Baycrest’s most brilliant minds to pursue their research and innovative solutions for the aging population.
This unique program will support researchers in the first five years of their careers, with funds supporting equipment, operating costs, salaries and more. These peer-reviewed, one-time grants will be awarded at a maximum of $50,000 annually and will encourage researchers to explore new directions through support for proof-of-concept studies, pilot projects or high-risk/high-return ventures.
“Baycrest is incredibly important to my family,” says Larry Tanenbaum. “The innovative research happening at the Rotman Research Institute is changing the way we age and the future of brain health. We want to support that.”
Under the leadership of Randy McIntosh, Vice President of Research, Director of the Rotman Research Institute and Reva James, Leeds Chair in Neuroscience and Research Leadership, The Anne Tanenbaum Kick Start Grants Program will support the development of intellectual property and the translation of basic cognitive neuroscience research.
“This funding will accelerate our capacity to translate scientific findings to support the design and development of novel technologies and therapies for sustainable brain health,” says McIntosh.
By developing these new scientifically-validated technologies, products and systems, Baycrest is building on a rich history and an impressive record of success and scientific expertise in aging brain health to further improve care and quality of life. Thanks to the Estate of Anne Tanenbaum, this goal is well within reach.
