Baycrest remembers Joan Rivers

Joan RiversWith the passing of comedian Joan Rivers this week at age 81, Baycrest Health Sciences fondly remembers her electric and unforgettable performance at the Baycrest Gala in May, 2000.

An hour before hitting the stage, Rivers attended a press conference arranged by Baycrest where she met with Toronto entertainment reporters and community news media. A door opened and in walked this tiny porcelain doll of a woman in a gorgeous flowing gown with a couple handlers by her side. The room’s energy kicked into overdrive.

Rivers started to make her way toward the front podium that was set up on a riser with flower bouquets on each side. She stopped in her tracks and looked mortified. With a wave of her hand, she declared, “I’m not standing up there. Get me a chair honey. I’ll sit right here with everyone.” For the next 20 minutes, Rivers talked to reporters like she was an old friend. No pretense, no celebrity arrogance – she was just having a gab fest and enjoying the moment. She answered questions with warmth, friendship and humor.

When she walked on stage a half hour later, it was vintage and hard-core Rivers all the way. She knew there was a wealthy crowd in the audience and deftly tailored her jokes, put-downs and one-line zingers to connect with that group. Marriage, money, sex, aging…nothing was off limits.  She made us laugh to the point of tears.  She was ours for one night and what a night it was.

Baycrest sends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Joan Rivers.
